As an Illinois consumer who cares about low-cost phone service, I urge you to support House Bill 3689. The proposed legislation would: * Require AT&T to again offer the low-cost Consumer’s Choice plans. * Make it easier to help the less fortunate connect to broadband by placing a “check box” on bills by which people could donate to an assistance program for internet customers in need. For about a decade, AT&T landline customers saved money on the Consumer’s Choice phone plans. One of the best phone deals in the nation, the plans were mandated by the Illinois General Assembly. But in 2017, AT&T killed the plans as part of its push to deregulate local phone service. Smartphones are great, but the Consumer’s Choice plans were the cheapest, most reliable option for callers. AT&T talks about its landline network as if it’s a burden, but actually it’s been very lucrative for the company–we customers have shelled out billions of dollars, paying for the system many times over. Please, stand up to this phone giant and support a low-cost phone option for Illinois consumers, including some of the state's most vulnerable callers. Thank you.
