The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) is investigating what occurred in the gas and electricity markets when extreme winter weather hit the nation in Mid-February.
Energy prices skyrocketed across the country, leaving customers with high utility bills, and Illinois is still feeling the impact. Natural gas prices for some major utilities will be double what they were last spring.
Urge FERC to do a thorough investigation and uncover price gouging!
Dear Chairman Richard Glick, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)
As an Illinois consumer concerned about my gas bills, I urge FERC to thoroughly investigate possible electric and gas market manipulation surrounding February’s bitter cold that caused so much pain in Texas and across the country.
Gas pipelines and wellheads froze back then, and Illinois is still feeling the supply-and-demand effects of the natural gas industry’s problems weeks ago. In fact, gas prices are expected to be double what some utilities charged last spring.
For sure, some companies made out like bandits. One Australia-based gas pipeline company expected its profits to increase by hundreds of millions of dollars because of the deep freeze in Texas. And an official from another company said the cold snap and spike in gas prices was “like hitting the jackpot.”
They may be laughing all the way to the bank, but we’re paying extremely high gas prices this Spring.
Since so many people have already paid or are paying now higher bills, please do everything you can to uncover manipulation and inappropriate gouging in the energy markets during February's deep freeze. Enough is enough.
