Tell Springfield: I'm NOT an ATM for Gas Utilities!
There's a special surcharge (the “Qualified Infrastructure Plant," or QIP, charge) that allows Nicor Gas, Ameren Illinois and Peoples Gas to rapidly raise our heating bills.
The utilities say the surcharge is necessary to pay for pipe replacement, but they're legally obligated to do that work, and they performed it for decades without slapping us with an extra charge. In 2013, the utilities got legislative approval to charge us this fee. But now we’re fighting for state legislation (House Bill 3941/Senate Bill 570) that would eliminate it and slow down the gas utilities' reckless spending.
How reckless is it? Right now, in the middle of a pandemic and a tough winter, we're challenging Ameren's $76 million rate hike as well as Nicor's record $293 million rate-hike request. (That's the 3rd record request in 4 years!)
Please urge the governor and your legislators to eliminate the QIP surcharge.
